Slieveardagh Writers - Kevin Ryan
Mary
(by Kevin Ryan)
What is your name today as we stone and mock you,
Destroy every bit of hope and confidence you had?
Today a whore, tomorrow a virgin, squashed and made
Feel small, lost in the corner of the hall.
Do our laughs echo in your brain,
Do our faces appear to you like chronic nightmares?
Are these only the parts of your pain that ran through
Your head before you decided to end it?
Now your naked body so still and cold feels
The pain no more.
Now any of us just a bit human shivers with guilt
When we hear the name Mary.
Yes the lesson was hard and the penalty severe,
I hope we've learned.
