Dear Friends,

I wish to thank you for the great reception and welcome I received at Mass last weekend. I hope over time to visit you in your homes and enjoy a weak Ôcuppa ÔP G.

On all our behalf I offer gratitude to Fr. Breen

for his great work in this parish and pray the Good Lord bless and take care of him in his new parish of Ballylanders.

As mentioned last weekend the work on the parish house has commenced and is progressing well. The good weather was a blessing.

Happy holidays to all our students, may you rest and eat well but above all be safe for the holiday period.

May God bless you all.

The annual pilgrimage to Knock will take place on Sunday 7 August 2011

Eucharistic Congress 2012

Sunday June 24th is the feast of Corpus Christi.  As part of the lead up to the  Eucharistic Congress there is a special celebration in the Cathedral in Thurles @ 7p.m. on Sunday June 24th. Each Parish is asked to nominate someone to receive the  Eucharistic Congress Candle. This candle will be a focus point in the preparation programme for the Congress.

Holy Water

We have purchased a new Holy Water Barrel. It has a tap to make it easy to fill your water bottles.  It is placed in the side porch (Church Lane Side).  You can get to it from the main body of the Church anytime the Church is open.  Please bring your own bottle. Holy Water renews the grace of our Baptism.

Introducing the New Missal – To assist our preparation for changes in some of the words that we pray at Mass from September next, please see the question and answer below.  In addition, you may wish to view the brief video and further explanations which are now available on www.catholicbishops.ie.  Related topics on the new edition of the Roman Missal are also on www.liturgy-ireland.ie.

Is the Mass changing?

The structure of the Mass is not changing. The order and the actions of the Mass remain unchanged. The readings at Mass are not changed. However, with the introduction of the new edition of the Roman Missal throughout the English-speaking world, we will all notice a change in how the Mass sounds. The translations of a number of our prayer texts from the original Latin have changed – sometimes by a particular word or in the word order. Prayers that we have become used to reciting by memory now have to be relearned. Prayers that we are used to hearing the priest say will sound different to us.

The style of language we will hear and pray may seem more formal to us and perhaps, in parts, more complex. But over time, with the praying of these texts, the sound of the Mass will again become familiar to us.

What is the Roman Missal?

The term ÔMissalÕ is used to refer to the book that contains all the prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass. The Missal is first written in Latin and this Latin text is then translated into the particular language of the people. In this way, while the Mass may be celebrated in many languages across the Roman Catholic world, it is the same core Latin text that is being prayed by the Church. We have been using our current Missal since St PatrickÕs Day 1975. It is sometimes referred to as the Missal of Pope Paul VI. Now we have a new edition of that Missal.

Famine 1848 Walk

Rev Ian Cruickshank, Rector of Kilcooley and Crohane, will lead this year's Famine 1848 Walk. The Walk which takes place on Saturday, 30 July at 3pm commemorates all those who died during the Great Famine and the 1848 Rising which took place in Ballingarry in the middle of the Famine. The rebel leaders, several of them from the Protestant tradition, were transported to Van Diemen's Land. The Walk will begin at the National Flag Monument in The Commons and proceed to the Famine Warhouse at Farranrory Upper. The distance of 1 1/2 miles will be covered at an easy pace. Refreshments will be served at the end of the Walk. The Walk takes place, rain or shine, on the last Saturday in July, the day of the Rising. All are welcome to this event which is organised by the Ballingarry 1848 Committee.
