Holy Water
We
have purchased a new Holy Water Barrel. It has a tap to make it easy to fill
your water bottles. It is placed
in the side porch (Church Lane Side).
You can get to it from the main body of the Church anytime the Church is
open. Please bring your own
bottle. Holy Water renews the grace of our Baptism.
Introducing
the New Missal – To assist our preparation for changes
in some of the words that we pray at Mass from September next, please see the
question and answer below. In
addition, you may wish to view the brief video and further explanations
which are now available on www.catholicbishops.ie. Related topics on the new edition of
the Roman Missal are also on www.liturgy-ireland.ie.
Is
the Mass changing?
The structure of the Mass is not changing. The
order and the actions of the Mass remain unchanged. The readings at Mass are
not changed. However, with the introduction of the new edition of the Roman
Missal throughout the English-speaking world, we will all notice a change in
how the Mass sounds. The translations of a number of our prayer texts from the
original Latin have changed – sometimes by a particular word or in the
word order. Prayers that we have become used to reciting by memory now have to
be relearned. Prayers that we are used to hearing the priest say will sound
different to us.
The style of language we will hear and pray may
seem more formal to us and perhaps, in parts, more complex. But over time, with
the praying of these texts, the sound of the Mass will again become familiar to
us.
What is the Roman
Missal?
The term ÔMissalÕ is used to
refer to the book that contains all the prayers and instructions for the
celebration of the Mass. The Missal is first written in Latin and this Latin
text is then translated into the particular language of the people. In this
way, while the Mass may be celebrated in many languages across the Roman
Catholic world, it is the same core Latin text that is being prayed by the
Church. We have been using our current Missal since St PatrickÕs Day 1975. It
is sometimes referred to as the Missal of Pope Paul VI. Now we have a new
edition of that Missal.

Last Wednesday evening, the
county 10 mile championship road race was staged in Ballynonthy, where a large number of athletes went to the
start line. In fourth place, over
the finishing line was Ross Alexander with a marvellous run, with a personal
best time of 57.33. Our second man home for us was Mike Carey, who was making
his debut for the club, with an excellent time of 66.49. Then we had Tadgh Vaughan running
strong at the end, in 68.38 and claiming second o/45. Close behind in a time of 68.53 came Leslie Smyth and
winning the o/55 title. Andrew Symth crossed the line in 70.55 and Martin Ivors took a
large chunk of his previous time with a super run in 73.10 and going away with
the bronze 0/55 medal, which was a great effort. Jim McDonnell got around in 77.23 and was well pleased with
that off limited training. It was
great to see the club represented in the ladies section of the event with Helen
Linane taking silver in 0/40 medal in a good
79.11. Well done to the host club
for putting on a well managed fixture.
Our own Michael Cahill 5k
road race will soon be upon us as it being held on September 2nd at
7.30pm with headquarters once again at the Presentation School, Ballingarry.
Athletics
Well done to Lorraine OÕ
Shea, Mohober, who had a tremendous win at the Celtic Games Athletics
International in Antrim on Saturday 13th August. Lorraine won the long jump with a fine
jump of 5.69m representing Athletics Ireland. She also had a silver medal in the 4x100m relay later in the
day.
2011 has been a good year for
Lorraine who has won the Irish Indoor & Outdoor Long Jump Under 18
Championships as well as the Scottish Indoor Title.
