Inside Ballingarry GAA Club

GOLF CLASSIC REPORT 2002.

The Annual “Friends Of Ballingarry GAA” Golf Classic was held on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday May 3rd & 4th last in Callan Golf Club, by kind permission of Captain, Jim Kirby and his Committee.
It was an outstanding success both socially and financially. 84 teams played and 62 of them represented GAA Clubs from all parts of Co Tipperary. They came form the Banks of the Shannon to the southernmost banks of the Suir and we were supported by many, many teams from the banks of the Nore.
As well as competing for the 10 Classic prizes, the GAA Clubs were competing for the title of Co Tipperary GAA Club Golf Champions, the holders of which were Holycross GAA Club.
The Committee were apprehensive before hand due to the many days and weeks of rain, but they needn’t have worried. They were well looked after by “The Man Above”. Apart for some early fog on Saturday, we had glorious weather. The
sun shone continuously and with the Golf Course in immaculate condition everything went off very smoothly.
The 2002 Champions are once again Holycross GAA Club represented by John Doyle, Jackie Lanigan, Pat Hassett & Tony Lanigan They had a fine score of 101 points and are now the proud holders of the “Babs Keating Trophy”

Ballingarry U-1O’s win 1st. South Championship
Ballingarry’s U10 Gaelic Football team brought pride to the parish on Sunday, November 4”’, 2001, in Ned Hall Park, Clonmel when they defeated a gallant St. Patrick’s team in the final of the U-10 South Tipperary Championship before a large crowd, on a scoreline of Ballingarry 3 - 5, St. Patrick’s 1 - 6
Ballingarry got off to a great start when Adrian Cleere pointed after a great run from centre-field after 3 minutes. St. Patrick’s then came into the game and by the 15”’ minute had scored 1-3 with out reply. Their scores were hard eamed though, as Ballingarry were defending like ‘tigers’ and it took some opportunistic finishing from St. Patrick’s forwards to put them ahead. However, Ballingarry fought back and two more points by Adrian Cleere brought the score back to 1-3 to 0-3, in favour of St. Patrick’s, when referee, Mick Lonergan, brought the first half to an end.
Ballingarry started the second half like 'a house on fire'. After 5 minutes, Michael “Blondie” Ivors was fouled in the large rectangle and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to Ballingarry. Michael took the penalty himself, and although it was saved, Adrian Cleere followed up to
slam the ball into the back of the net for a goal and the equalising score. Ballingarry then upped the tempo and started to pull away from their opponents. Michael “Blondie” Ivors scored a point after 8 minutes and then scored the goal of the game when he took on the entire St. Patrick’s backline before putting the ball into the top corner of the St. Patrick’s net, to leave the scoreline, Ballingarry 2-4, St. Patrick’s 1-3. St. Patrick’s then scored a point in the 13”' minute but their comeback was shortlived when Adrian Cleere scored his second goal of the game with 5 minutes remaining . For the last five minutes, St. Patrick’s put severe pressure on the Ballingarry back-line, but their only rewards were 2 points from frees. Referee, Mick Lonergan, then brought the game to a halt amidst great scenes of joy.
Scorers :- Adrian Cleere ; 2 - 3 Michael ‘Blondie’ Ivors 1 - 2
Great credit must go to the manager, Patrick “Blondie” Ivors and his assistant George Ivors for their patience and dedication in training this group of youngsters and succeeding in winning a South championship in their first year of playing together.
This team will go a lot further and, who knows, some of the stars of the future may well be present on this team.
